This is a place for beach visitors to check beach conditions and post their personal observations of the latest beach conditions. When beach visitors post in the comments section below it improves the June Grass Report by vastly expanding the number of beaches that can be covered daily. Beach visitors who want to include pictures with their reports should email them to junegrasspics AT gmail DOT com, for posting on the main page. Please note that reports made on this page will not appear on the automated FB or Twitter feeds. You must subscribe to comments to get email updates from this page.
Beach report guidelines:
1.) Please include the following information: location, your estimation of the Grossness Index level, time of day, wind direction, tide, critters observed, water temp, weather, etc.
2.) The June Grass Report does NOT do predictions. However, you may politely ask our residents and long-term readers for updates or opinions.
3.) Please know the difference between seaweed and June Grass before posting an update. If you don’t know please email pics of the suspect marine flora to the address above. It would be helpful for us to have example pics of both seaweed and June Grass.
4.) Updates and comments are appreciated. Complaints are not. Keep it civil. I do this for free because I feel like it. I individually moderate ALL comments and I delete the rude/abusive ones. Also, I will not approve updates that are not for the locations listed in the title of this page because I am trying to make it easier for visitors to find information about specific beaches/locations. In Destin, on Miramar Beach, June grass still present. Very little seaweed.

I apologize, we are in Miramar Beach. The June Grad stretched all the way past Henderson Beach going North. About 15% visibility in most spots. Seems to thin out a bit more towards afternoon.

June grass is very thick and consistent at Seagrove. There were pockets of clear sea but would close up. Ocean was clear yesterday which gave us hope after 3 days of moderate ick. Water is very warm. Hopefully will clear out for our last day. Anyone have clear water today?

The seaweed has been in for awhile and the June grass came in recently. It usually gets worse as the summer goes on, although variable weather can clear it out sometimes. There really is no way to tell.
On the island today the water was full of junegrass and some seaweed, I’ll try again next week

Yup, still here. Not sure what the cause of the quiet is. I have secondhand info that there is patchy June Grass at the west end of Okaloosa Island

Just arrived at Ft. Walton. Today July 23, 2021 the “June grass” was thick. Other people in our Condo said they’d been here a few days and they went to a Destin Public Beach where it wasn’t as bad. I’m hoping for quick improvement.
We are here now (July 22). June grass here for the past few days. Seaweed too. No jellyfish yet.

We were at the boardwalk on Okaloosa Island Tuesday 15 June and crab island yesterday. Not one hint of June grass. 10/10 beach day and boating day 😀!

Okaloosa Island Pier had just a little and not very dense in a few spots I saw, maybe a 1 on the scale if that high, next to nothing. Miramar Beach was clear and has bee since Saturday 8/1.

Yes, June grass is medium to heavy near the pier
We were there from 7/11-7/18. First day was maybe a 1 or 2. Days 2-3 were GR of 3-4, and then the rest of the week was about 1-2. Overall, the june grass was not that bad. We were in front of Summer Place.
I’m there now the water is crystal clear and smooth I’ve been here for four days and have enjoyed your days beautiful weather in Florida
The Azure Complex on Okaloosa Island is spotty. One end is an 8 grossness. The other end is a 4. Water was clear yesterday so it all came in overnight.
Just left 30a – Seacrest Beach – we visited June 24-26, 2020. Winds blowing from the south and June Grass grossness range of 5-7 because we didn’t want to swim in it…it was thick and gross. Also red flags for two days straight. We spent our time at the pool.
All or nothing: grossness factor ranges from 2-8 within a mile or so.
Beasley Park on Okaloosa Island is all over the grossness scale: clear areas with little June grass: good for swimmmin (GR=2) alternate with patches of utter grossness (GR=8)

Pretty bad June Grass condition at Henderson Park as of June 17.
I never been to Miramar beach but was trying to plan a trip with the kids 3rd week in July, I’m coming from 14 hours away. I had never heard of June grass but now I’m worried, is it normally bad in July? Is it better in September? I know it’s unpredictable but from past history is July bad timing for this.
It’s anyone’s guess if there will be Junegrass or not. I have been going to Miramar and surrounding areas for 20 years and its just the luck of the draw really.

Back Porch report: June Grass yeck factor maybe a .5 or 1 , a couple miles down the road at Destin Crab Trap its maybe a 2- 2.5, anything more than a 2 and the stuff clogs up the eyelets on my fishing pole. beach is softening up after that tropical storm, but still has a little compactness to it, still overall, good beach day at Back Porch.

Destin Crystal Beach, and Destin Jetties. Perfect weather today, but June Grass Grossness level a solid 7. Been this way for at least 10 days. Can’t get a fishing line out of the water without clumps gumming up eyelets, leaders, and hooks.

How is the water clarity on Okaloosa right now? We will be down over the 8th and are hoping for good water conditions.
We went Friday 5/22/20 west of the boardwalk. June grass was in patches, it’s definitely bloomed, but still not too thick to swim in in some places. As a local, I can say pretty confidently that I’ve noticed Destin beaches rarely have the June grass/ stay mostly clear throughout the year compared to okaloosa island..

Very spotty junegrass at inlet beach today (5/16/20) in Walton County, grossness index = 0. Most people probably didn’t even notice it, but it’s there. Red flags, so lots of wave action.
June grass at Okaloosa Island Beaches. Solid 7. Fishing is all but ruined atm.
Staying near the Surf Hut by the Walton County line and the June grass has been a 7-8 on the grossness scale for miles both ways. Was hoping to do some surf fishing but haven’t found anywhere clear enough.

Silver shells/Henderson area is bad today. Tons of smelly seaweed . Very thick . Grossness at least 8 in first 30 feet. Farther out was better but still a 5-6. Plus jellyfish.

My sister is on the Island and spotted the moon jellyfish.
They come in the fall and they are huge.

We’re staying in Destin just across from the trac (close to Henderson) and the water is great! There’s been some seaweed from storms but I would rank it a 1 or 2 at the most. Nothing to be concerned with. Today it looks crystal clear and barely any waves.

June grass is pretty bad on oakaloosa island (I’d say an 8) I went to destin yesterday and the water was crystal clear!
I was there in June. It was horrible , I have never seen anything like it. I have been going to panhandle for many years, Pensacola beach, Navarre, Panama City etc, but never saw water like I did at Okaloosa! What is making it so bad there? I’ve been following just to see if water is clearing but I’m very curious now.. environmental?

I have also been coming to the panhandle for years and reading the June grass report for years ( Thank You). It always seem that I see more reports about June Grass at Okaloosa than anywhere else, followed closely by Navarre. It is what it is. We have had great luck with no grass for the last 4-5 years but that have been times it was so bad that we considered moving on down the gulf coast to get away from it.

I don’t know about okaloosa but Henderson was okay today. A couple of jellies and a little seaweed /green floaty grass but not much.
It’s beautiful today. Ask closer and I will check it out for you then. Usually around this time it stays nice throughout the late summer
Oakaloosa island, The mornings have been pretty clear, but the afternoons roll in the June grass and now ( today) a lot of seaweed. Destin was clear but the beaches are so crowded . And the traffic is insane. You have to go by google maps for traffic situation. Good luck
On island. June grass was pretty heavy today but not Terrible. Make it tough to surf fish.
We were in water but I’d say 5 out of 10.
Blue mountain today was hit and miss.
Miss: pea soup 10+ at red fish, to sea cliffs.
Hit: 1/4 mile either way clear and beautiful.
We are adults and teens that walk the beach. Whenever we pass a family in the water we let them know where the clear water is at the moment. They are always appreciative. Usually can find a clear patch within 1/2 mile or so.
Grayton Beach looks amazing today. Blue Mountain Beach looked decent as well but it was closed to swimming this morning.
Blue Mountain Beach is covered and so is Dune Allen. Going to try another beach tomorrow. The cam of Miramar looked nice. Might drive up there tomorrow

July 10, Miramar beach conditions. Calm water and crystal clear. I haven’t really had any updates so I didn’t want to spam the board. It appears we have weather coming in for the remainder of the week so I’m sure things will change. When at the beach please practice the “Leave no trace” philosophy and take all of your trash with you.
Don’t worry about spamming. Somebody was complaining about lack of current conditions the other day.
July 11th Miramar Beach at Edgewater.
No June grass present, water is very rough due to the impending storm. I look for them to be changing the flags to red or double red sometime this morning.

No June Grass at all today, water was crystal clear at Miramar Beach in front of Pompano Joe’s. Some small jellyfish and a little sargassum, but otherwise beautiful.

We were at Eglin Beach yesterday and I’d say a grossness of 4 maybe 5. You could walk out past the thick of it but it was still present.

And we are at yellow flag instead of red flag on Okaloosa Island. We have had two drownings in the last two days in Northwest Florida due to ignoring red flags, one in Destin and one in PCB
Beach Access 1 on Okaloosa Island which is by the Hilton garden is starting to clear up. Very little junegrass but water is still murky until you get to 2nd sandbar. Water is no longer pea soup but visibility is still only about a foot. Sunday 6/23. 4 pm

Fished at Pompano Joe’s this morning. Little to no June Grass. Just a tiny bit on the line every time I checked the bait. Water was beautiful.
Went to Miramar in Walton County today. Wasn’t allowed to be in the water aside from our feet but there was little to no June grass! I’d see like one stray piece every couple of waves. Hoping these crazy currents pulled it away and will be back to green or yellow Flags tomorrow.
Curious if it’s usually cleared up by September. We have never come down in the fall, but are going to in September this year. We were just there last week and it was pretty hit and miss. Some days were bad and some days were really good. But hoping to hear that it’s typically all gone by September.
Usually September is one of the best months to come for crystal clear water. Unless there is some weather in the gulf, the water is normally nice
Dune Pointe on Okaloosa Island. Been here since June 15th. Very thick June grass the first 2 days, not quite as bad yesterday, but still here. Hoping it’s clearing out soon!

It’s hard to say. It’s Hit or miss from Panama City to Pensacola. Usually by the end of month we are good to go

Okaloosa Island. There has been lots all week. It was clearing up this morning but now it’s getting heavy again. We went to Navarre yesterday and it’s clear there!
Having lunch at Seaside. Just walked to the beach. Surf is calm. Lots of June grass but some “clearish” areas here and there close to shore. Lots of people enjoying those areas.
The water is clear between beach access 1 & 2 on Okaloosa Island.
Pretty thick since this morning from Seagrove through Seaside, past Dune Allen beach. We were here for the week and really only had one morning with clear water. I had no idea about June grass prior to scheduling this trip. This was our first visit. We won’t return for a summer vacation again. It’s too much of a gamble. I would love to come in the fall though. I hear it’s beautiful.
Today the water by The Back Porch in Destin was beautiful and clear- Seems as though most of the seaweed and what june grass was there moved out. A perfect day for weather and water!!
Oakaloosa island near Nautilus, June grass is pretty thick in the water and on the beach. While people are still in the water some areas are so thick with grass they appear black. It’s a no go for me. How’s henderson it looks clear on camera?
Staying at Silver Shells in Destin this week. Water was pretty stirred up from the storms over the weekend and water had a good amount of seaweed in it and just a little june grass mixed in but everyday the water is becoming clearer. Yesterday I’d say it was a 2.5 on the index.
June 12th started off with just marginal June grass but picked up by the afternoon. Very thick and probably around a 7 in grossness.

There is nothing wrong with asking questions about the water quality. You can also go to sowal.com they have beach cams all over the panhandle and there is one at Surf Hut which is Miramar beach so you can also look for yourself.
I will be In town July 5th and cannot wait to get my toes in the sand and jump in the warm gulf waters!

Pretty grassy. Still can get in the water though. It was moving closer to shore with clear water behind it. Hoping it looks good tomorrow.
Okaloosa does have grass but it’s not horrible. I’d say 3-5 ish. It is really churned up and choppy today so it wouldn’t be clear anyway. Hopefully the water will settle down tonight and that north breeze will push it out. Would love to wake up to clear calm water tomorrow.

Just got off the beach oakaloosa island near Nautilus condo. It was nice this morning water was relatively clear, but as the day progressed the water became thick with June grass

Dune Allen beach looks so green and mushy today 6/2. We are here thru 6/8 so I hope it clears up! We enjoyed beautiful beaches this same time last year at Miramar beach. Does anyone know if the algae/June grass clears up rather quickly? TX native here.
It kind of depends! The June grass where we are staying was terrible late last week – check out the posts from Mirimar from Thursday 5/30 Friday 5/31 – pea soup, green, and THICK. Today, it’s much better and clear! I have a feeling by 6/8 it will be much better. If it’s really bad where you are, you can always check beach cams and find a public beach nearby that is clearer!

Went in water 5/31 around 4PM in Okaloosa near Breakers & junegrass was pretty bad. Got stuck in my hair, suit, the whole deal.

How are things looking in the Miramar Beach area? We are heading down in a little over a week and nothing can ruin a week on the beach more than June Grass overload! Lol

Henderson Beach looked like guacamole today. So much Junegrass with a moderate of seaweed, very high on the grossness scale.

Grayton beach state park was absolutely beautiful yesterday. Red and purple flag flying with a few nettle type stings, nothing to be concerned about. Okaloosa Island was thick in junegrass. We could see the grass in the waves. Poor water conditions in some areas can be seen at the Florida healthy beaches website. It’s all clear and fabulous at the Grayton beach state park.
Small sharks 1-2’ spotted by paddle boarders past outer sandbar.
Wind 6-7 mph SSE.
Small children were wearing PFDs.
Widely spaced sargassum.
I always miss the sharks!
Water in Okaloosa is not swimable as of yesterday and today looks just as bad if not worse. Really devastating! Trying to share a picture but not sure how.

Destin- June grass and seaweed both. Not good. About 5-6 on index. Goes out quite a ways – doesn’t look like it will clear in the next day or so for my vacation….

I was hopeful to surf fish today. Waves were too much for a 3 oz pyramid weight and the June grass coated my line with the first cast.

This is an EXCELLENT report! I’d like to see more like this, especially for fishing.

Okaloosa Island has had a lot of seaweed yesterday and today. I can’t swim in it.
Can I get June grass updates for ft Walton Beach. We will be there September 20th. Have been there in July the past 3 years and it’s been awful.
We are staying at the Waterscape in Fort Walton beach soon. Any current updates? Praying for clearer water this year. We went last year and the June Grass was pretty awful.
We stayed at the Fairfield Inn Ft Walton last weekend and two weekends before that. Junegrass and beds of what I think is brown seagrass have been in the water. We stayed here over memorial day weekend and the water was beautiful then.
My buddy who owns a condo in Miramar Beach said it was pretty clear over there about three weeks ago.

We’re headed to Fort Walton Beach this weekend. How is the water? We were there only two weeks ago and there was a ton of june grass at that time.

What part of Destin? There are alot of beaches in the area, and June grass can affect 1, 2 or all of them.
There are several beach cams in the area as well depending on what part you are going to.
It’s been raining all week with red & double red flags. Overcast today

Left Okaloosa and spent the day at Henderson State Park. The water was clear and beautiful!

Just got here on oakaloosa island, water is brackish and sea-slugs are all over the beach
Got in this evening to Miramar beach, clear, no signs of any grass. Cast a spoon for about 45 minutes with no grass on the lure or hooks.
We’ve been staying on Okaloosa Island since 7/25, water has been calm, clear and essentially no June grass in the mornings. Water has gotten a little choppy and up to grossness index of about 2.5-3 in the afternoons.

Okaloosa Island was very nice today. No june grass. Unless someone reports every morning, june grass report is kind of like traffic – unpredictable and can change at any time any place. I still have to go check for myself…

Thats great news! I will be rolling in next Friday, we have had so so years at Miramar but it seems that stretch of beach seems to escape alot of the grass, I’m hoping thats the case this year as well.

We will be coming to Fort Walton July 14th. I am really hoping this clears up. Saw some pictures today on Instagram from a family member that’s down there this week and I’ve never seen it so bad. It’s even piling up on the beach! How long does this typically take to clear up?
Varies. It has definitely been that bad before
Was down there about 3-4 years ago on the 4th of July and it was so bad the water would not push it. I have also been down there (Okaloosa) and have grass when we got there and by the end of the week it be nice . Still my favorite place on the panhandle.

We just got home from that area yesterday. It was terrible. My husbands bathing suit pockets were filled with softball size globs within 5 minutes. It was so thick that there were dead fish all over the beach. Hopefully it will clear up soon.
Is Ft. Walton Beach around the Marriott clear today?

Ft Walton beach is a 7 of 10 today. its really starting to pile up on the beach where we are staying. Not enjoyable at all.

Santa Rosa Beach is nice today. Not much June Grass at all. I would rate it a 1 at the most. Water is much calmer than yesterday as well. Yellow flags flying. A Monday at the beach is better than any other Monday.

Thank you so much for not only keeping this going but also for making changes and improvements. I’m a Miramar Beach guy myself, that is usually where we visit each year, I will be in town July 6th and will hopefully have clear water, I will post reports once I arrive.
