June Grass Researchers Need Your Help!

Would any beach lovers out there be willing to help gather some data about June Grass?

Today I received this message from Laura Tiu, UF IFAS Marine Science Extension Agent for Okaloosa/Walton Counties:

“I’m looking for some samples of June Grass so that I can have the genus/species identified.  To me, it looks like a filamentous algae, but sometimes I’ve seen it as a mix of algae.  I’d like to get some samples positively identified so that we have a better idea of what we are dealing with and perhaps can develop some educational materials.  It can be collected in a clean zip lock bag, plastic or glass container.  We can arrange pick up/delivery based on location. Also, any really good high-quality photographs would be appreciated (include photo credit). Thank you”

You can contact Laura at:

Office: 850-683-8434 (Okaloosa)
Office: 850-892-8172 (Walton)
Cell: 850-612-6197

Any samples you collect should be kept cold, frozen if you are in a condo and have access to a freezer. Samples will be most useful if you note the date and GPS coordinates where they were collected. If you don’t have the GPS coordinates then just the location is fine.

Laura says that you can drop off any samples you submit at:

South Walton extension office: 70 Logan Lane, Grayton Beach (adjacent to Frank’s Cash and Carry, Wednesdays only )

Walton County extension office: 732 N 9th St, Defuniak Springs, FL 32433

Okaloosa County extension office: 3098 Airport Rd, Crestview, FL 32539

Would anybody be willing to collect June grass samples and drop them off at one of these locations (or call Laura and work something out) on your way out of town?

Thank you for your help in advance!
