Still no June Grass Here

image

There are rumors that the June Grass is starting to come into areas west of Walton County like Navarre and Fort Walton. The wind is supposed to be from the North for the next three days, which often calms the Gulf. When I was wading this morning I observed shoals of ~1″ baitfish being chased by small schools of ~1′ game fish. Blues maybe?

All Clear in St. Andrew Bay 5/20/12

Today I went snorkeling at St. Andrew State Park in Panama City. Not a hint of June Grass, a lovely beach day, decent visibility at about 30′, tons of fish including mullet, bucktooth parrotfish, cocoa damsels, bicolor damsels, sheepshead, small snappers and sea bass, senett, and a pufferfish!

No Swimming at East Pass in Destin

There are high levels of fecal bacteria in the water. You can read the news article here.

Please bookmark the Okaloosa County Health Department page for the most up to date beach water testing results.

I also find that the Florida Beaches app for Android (free on the Google Play store) stays on top of beach closures.

Live from Dune Allen

Previously I have gotten some negativity from a local on tripadvisor.com about the fact that The June Grass Report usually comes from Topsail Hill State Park. This happened to be the most convenient beach for me to access in the past, but now I have the ability to report on other beaches such as Dune Allen and Destin Pass.

As of about 7am there was zero june grass at Dune Allen, although there is still a fair bit of sargassum around and the south wind is miring the visibility.

Stormy Seas

Well as you can tell it didn’t turn out to be a great beach weekend after all. However, storms don’t diminish the beauty of the beach, although the sargassum will probably make the sea air less sweet later this week.

People aren’t the only ones who enjoy the beach…

I encountered another beach visitor on my way to go swimming this morning. I kept a respectful distance and took a few photos. After my swim the deer was still up in the dunes.

June Grass Update 5/11/12

June grass update for Walton County May 11, AM:

on the June Grass Grossness Index.

I went for a quick swim this morning. The water is a bit cool and there was a northeast wind so I didn’t stay in long but it was nice anyway. For you surf fishermen: there were some birds on a bait ball and a couple of dolphins just off-shore and yesterday I saw a few sand fleas and some crabs in the surf. There were a few baitfish around.

There is some sargassum on the beach from the storms earlier this week and some other algae and clumps of marine debris about, but nothing to make water sports unpleasant.

It looks like it’s going to be a great beach weekend!

If there isn’t a current June Grass report up on this site I suggest checking the link to local beach cams on the left side of this page. They can often give you an idea of what the water is like.

PLEASE ENJOY THE BEACH RESPONSIBLY!

Just a moment of your time please…
