It’s Still Raining…

According to meteorological agencies more than 3″ of rain has fallen so far. By watching the animated radar maps it seems that the rain is swirling around this region in a counter clockwise pattern, or coming from the west, so it seems unlikely that the storm will clear up the June Grass. There is a lot of flotsam and jetsam on the beach right now, the water is fairly calm, and it is a lovely pearly green that the photos don’t portray even remotely accurately.

Rain

It’s raining here right now and has been since around 4am. We really need this rain, even if it puts a damper on outdoor activities. Let’s hope that the rain will push the June Grass off-shore.

June Grass Update 7/15/11

June grass update for Walton County July 15th, 2011, PM:

on the June Grass Grossness Index. The water is a beautiful emerald color. Unfortunately it is due to a lot of June Grass, but many people seem to be enjoying the water regardless. There is still a fair amount of sargassum in the water and on the beach. The moon is full this weekend, so the tidal change is more dramatic than usual. Keep an eye out for thunderstorms throughout the weekend. Due to extremely dry weather this spring and summer there is a Burn Ban in effect in Walton County, please limit your outdoor fires to  very carefully monitored BBQ grills. June Grass Update

June grass update for Walton County July 4th, 2011, AM:

on the June Grass Grossness Index. The surf dumped a truckload of sargassum on the beach yesterday afternoon and there is quite a bit more in the water, but sargassum is better than June Grass any day. The June Grass has come back in a bit. The wind is ENE and the water is a little choppier, but it is still nice for swimming. There seems to be a slightly cooler current running west, parallel to the beach, that is a couple of meters wide. There are even more baitfish in the water today and some fishing boats seem to be having some luck just off-shore. Keep an eye on the weather today.  Additionally, if you decide to visit Walton County this weekend there is a Burn Ban in effect. Please leave the fireworks, including sparklers, at home. Today should be a great day for picnics, beach sports, relaxing, and water sports.

June Grass Update

June grass update for Walton County July 3rd, 2011, AM:

on the June Grass Grossness Index.  Yesterday afternoon’s “almost” thunderstorm and the current NE wind seems to have chased the June Grass away and the Gulf is beautiful right now! The water very warm, about 86F, is  a nice transparent turquoise and there are small rolling waves. I’ve already been swimming for about an hour this morning and only saw a little June grass and a few isolated clumps of sargassum. I saw many fish while I was swimming including: a remora, juvenile pompano, lady fish, and baitfish. It might be a good fishing day. Do keep an eye on the large clouds off-shore, the beach is no place to be during a thunderstorm. It is very humid today, so make sure you drink enough water if you are out in the sun at the beach. Additionally, if you decide to visit Walton County this weekend there is a Burn Ban in effect. Please leave the fireworks, including sparklers, at home. Today would definitely be a good day for beach combing, building sand castles, and just about any water sports.

June Grass Update

June grass update for Walton County July 2nd, 2011, AM:

5-7 on the June Grass Grossness Index.  Beach conditions are much the same as yesterday. The Gulf is very calm and about the color of the cheap jade beads sold in craft stores. There is a lot of debris on the tideline, both natural and human in origin. If everybody picked up trash on the beach for ten minutes that would do a lot to help. I saw some decent-sized rafts of sargassum seaweed coming in along with some very concentrated areas of June Grass. It is very humid today, so make sure you drink enough water if you are out in the sun at the beach. Additionally, if you decide to visit Walton County this weekend there is a Burn Ban in effect. Please leave the fireworks, including sparklers, at home. Today would definitely be a good day for beach combing and building sand castles.
